What Is Poly-B?
Poly-B, short for polybutylene, is a flexible plastic pipe that was commonly installed in Canadian homes from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s. It was used as an affordable alternative to copper and carried hot and cold water to fixtures such as sinks, showers, bathtubs and toilets.
In simple terms, Poly-B forms part of a home’s water-supply system. It is not the same as the larger drain and sewer pipes that carry wastewater away from the home.
How Can I Tell If My Home Has Poly-B?
Poly-B is often grey, although other colours were also produced. Visible sections may sometimes be found under sinks, near the water heater, inside a mechanical room or along the ceiling of an unfinished basement.
Other possible clues include:
- A flexible plastic water-supply pipe rather than rigid copper
- Printed markings such as PB2110
- A home built or substantially renovated during the years Poly-B was commonly used
